If you’ll be staying a night or two in Dreis, the Waldhotel Sonnora boutique hotelis a top pick. It has 15 luxurious rooms and suites. The grounds include a guest lounge, garden, and terrace. It’s the perfect setting for a low-key or romantic getaway. Even if you’ll be out and about the rest of the day, you can start the day off right with their gourmet breakfast. But be sure to have at least one lunch or dinner in their restaurant!


If you’re in town on a day trip or your accommodations are elsewhere, be sure to book a reservation at the Waldhotel Sonnora Restaurant. This is a 3 Star Michelin restaurant with a lengthy list of culinary awards. Award-winning chef Helmut Thieltges was the son of the hotel’s founders. His modern take on traditional Danish dishes drew international travelers to his restaurant. Thieltges’s apprentice Chef Clemens Rambichler took over the restaurant in 2017 after Chef Thieltges passed away at the age of 61. Chef Rambichler has introduced new dishes, but Chef Thieltges signature dishes are still on the menu.


Order the 8 course Menu Sonnora to enjoy their revered signature dishes or order à la carte favorites such as:


· Challans duck a la presse, with a softly spiced skin, glazed pears, red cabbage, and pan-fried duck foie gras.

· Tart of beef fillet tartare with Imperial caviar.

· Galantine of quail stuffed with pigeon breast.


Moselle River Boat Ride To Surrounding Villages


There are 24 picturesque villages along the Moselle River, the most popular being Hunsrück, Eifel, Landshut, Trier, and Bernkastel-Kues. If you celebrate Christmas, Bernkastel-Kues is a year-round Christmas village and an excellent place to shop for unique gifts. Not to worry if you don’t celebrate Christmas as there are plenty of sights to see along the river!


The villages are small but mighty, offering fine dining and a variety of solo and guided excursions and activities. The best way to get from one city to the next is by boat. Enjoy the view from the water or hop off the boat to explore.
